Calder Park Overview

Official Calder Park homepage

Calder Park

Getting There

Calder Park is located 20km North West of Melbourne on the Calder Freeway.

Easiest access from the Melbourne CBD is to take the City Link Tollway (formerly the Tullamarine FREEway) and then onto the Calder Freeway. Calder Park is on your left at about the 20km post. Alternatively you can take the West Gate Bridge/Freeway and then the Western Ring Road (watch out for the fixed speed cameras now operating on the Ring Rd) and take the Sunshine Ave exit to the Calder Freeway and then out to Calder.

On Arrival

Entry for Marshalls to ALL events is via the main competitors entrance (Gate 2 in Circuit map) with the Credentials Office located off to your left as you turn off the freeway (if used at the event) otherwise sign into complex (this is not the actual event sign on) and find the crowd.

Signing On

Larger events utilise the credentials office located on your left at Gate 2 prior to actually entering the complex.

Most smaller events sign on can be found in the radio hut which is located accross the pre grid from the grandstand. You will need to sign an indemnity as you enter the complex, this is additional to your normal sign on.

Circuit Usage / Configurations

Calder Park is a true multipurpose facility with the following track configurations;

Club Circuit: 1.6km (1Mile) long, this is the original layout as built in the early 1960's until the circuit was upgraded in the mid 80's for the WTCC. Cars start at Start/Finish (driving clockwise) and turn right in a hairpin which puts them onto the back straight they then execute a right, left, right hairpin which puts them back onto the main straight.

National Circuit: (2.4km) was created in the 80's by extending the length of the main straight with a right, left and kink on the run back to the existing back straight.

1/4 mile drag strip: utilises the main straight. The VHT traction compound causes all sorts of problems for circuit racing as it's like an ice rink when wet/raining.

Superspeedway: Nicknamed the "Thunderdome" was the only NASCAR style superspeedway outside the USA for a long time. Was popular in the late 80's/early 90's but declined, a revival is currently being attempted (Early 2003).

Grand Prix Circuit: Uses a combination of the National circuit and Thunderdome. Starting on the National circuit S/F cars turn left onto the Thunderdome and do 7/8 of a lap turning left back onto the national circuit to complete the lap. This configuration was used for the 1987 WTCC round held at Calder.

There have also been Jet Boat, Motocross events and a Guns & Roses concert held in the complex.
