Gilles-Villeneuve Overview

Gilles-Villeneuve

Getting There

First (And Ideally) you need to be in Montreal!

From Downtown, it's best to hop onto the Metro (Tube) and head for the Jean Drapadeu(?) station.
From there, it's a fairly short walk over to the I'lle De Notre Dame, where the track is located

No further signing on is required over the weekend.
On the Friday, Saturday and Sunday there is a mandatory marshals briefing at the Rowing Club HQ at the track. This is located near to the Hairpin section of track.
These briefing tend to start very early (Friday at about 6am) Refreshments are available free of charge on all days.
From here, buses take you to your posts and this is where you are returned to at the end of the day!

Circuit Usage / Configurations

The Circuit is normally only used once a year as a racetrack, although CART did use it in 2002.
At other times, it's a public park and is very popular with skaters and cyclists

Posts

Click on the post name for details.

- There are about 15 posts, but some have sub-posts (2 and 2a for example)

Some posts, like anywhere else are better than others.

The best places are at the first corner (1,1a,2)
Post 6 can be interesting at times (J Villeneuve destroyed his car in practice here in 2001 - I was there!)

Also Post 14 and 15 are exciting with post 15 being dubbed "The Champions Wall" and is the cause of many red flags as unsuspecting F1 drivers slam their shiny new car into the wall marked "Welcome To Quebec!"

Lunch / Circuit Customs

For marshals, lunch is delivered fresh to your post via a bloody big truck.
Lunches tend to contain a big sandwich, fruit, cold drink, cheese/cracker, some sort of cake and a packet of crisps

Marshal's Perspective

A great place to Marshal - the only confusing/annoying bit is when you are blue-flagging the F1's and the Radio Controller tells you to blue something.....it's in French first, and by the time it's repeated in English - the car has long gone!

Circuit Contacts

There is a campground about 20km from the track south of the city. It is the KoA of Montreal (http://www.koakampgrounds.com/where/qc/56102/). It takes less than 20 minutes to drive to the subway station at Longueuil where there is a large car park.
