Oulton Park
Getting There
|
Take Junction 19 (Knutsford/Chester) off the M6 (don't bother with Junction 18 as it's easier to go on one junction and follow a more simple route). Follow the A556, signed for Chester for around 10 miles. At the
junction with the A49 (Shell garage to the right), follow the Oulton Park tourist sign. At the next set of lights go straight on, and after approx 100 yards, turn left with the tourist sign.
The road then becomes a very tight country lane. At the T junction turn right, and the main entrance is around 100 yards on the left.
|
Entry to the circuit is now ticket only. If you have not received tickets, contact the chief marshal of the organising club to make alternative arrangements. | Added by Dave Brand 28/06/2004 15:48

On Arrival
|
Once at the circuit, progress through the checkpoints[1] and head up towards the Chequers Restaurant[2] (oval bomb-shelter looking building) and turn left into the paddock. Cross over the paddock and head towards the circuit, diving through the gate between race control[3] and the medical centre[4] and park up on the track on the start/finish line.
For some meetings, the marshals' entrance is via the Lodge[19] entrance, where you'll drive straight onto the circuit. As before, make your way to the start/finish line and park up.
| |
|
Occasionally, particularly at Sunday meetings, there will be on-track activities which require the start-finish straight to be left clear. For such events, parking will be in Parc Fermé. | Added by Dave Brand 03/09/2006 17:28

As incident sign-on is now at the Chequers restaurant, it may be more convenient to park there rather than on pit lane. | Added by Dave Brand 28/06/2004 15:51

|
Across the start/finish line you will see two white lines, about 200mm apart, with diagonal hatching between them in line with holes in the pit wall & the Armco. This marks the position of the timing beam - parking across the line tends to upset the timekeepers! | Added by Dave Brand 28/06/2004 15:55

|
For some meetings, the log cabin which is used for signing on for off-road activities may be used for some marshals' sign-on.
After entering through the main entrance, take the first dirt road (for want of a better name!) on the left. This will take you down to the inside of Lodge. Go through the gate & across the circuit; through the gate on the other side of the circuit, turn right (it's the only way you can turn). Follow the road round to the right for a couple of hundred metres - as you come out of the trees you'll see the log cabin on your right & go over to the log cabin to sign on.
If entering through West Gate, turn left to get to the Log Cabin.
To get on to the circuit to go to your post, carry on in the same direction as you came in & take the next right. This will bring you to a gate onto the circuit - turn left onto the circuit! (If you're on Lodge, Deer Leap or Old Hall, you don't need to go onto the circuit, as you're already on the road that gives access to these posts). | Added by Dave Brand 16/04/2009 15:47

Signing On
|
Sign-on is normally carried out at the scrutineering bay[5] (another corrugated iron building) which is at the far end of the paddock. This usually starts at around 7:45. Once signed on, the Chequers is a fine place to get the much-needed bacon buttie!
|
Sign on for all other nonMedical car officials, that is nonIncident, is on the relevant floor at Race Control.
For bike meetings all nonMedical officials sign on at Race Control. | Added by KayBee 15/07/2002 17:40
|
|
Incident sign-on is now in the foyer of the Chequers restaurant[2]. All other disciplines sign on in Race Control.
At incident sign-on IOs are signed on first, so if you're an IO, go to the front of the queue. | Added by Dave Brand 07/03/2009 08:23

Circuit Usage / Configurations
|
Oulton can be run in three different configurations.
The normal one is the 'short' circuit which takes in Cascades, Fosters and then Knickerbrook (without chicane)
The second is 'Island', which consists of Cascades, Island, Foulstons thorough to Knickerbrook with the chicane.
The final configuration is the 'International' circuit which is the same as the Island configuration, but also goes out to Shell Corner, missing out the Island hairpin. | Added by paul 06/06/2002 15:21

|
For bike meetings the International or Full circuit is usually used however, this is without the Knickerbrook chicane | Added by KayBee 16/07/2002 15:29

Posts
Click on the post name for details.
Old Hall - The first corner on the circuit. The place where a large proportion of offs occur, so a great place to see some action.
The Avenue - Not really a busy stretch, but gives good views of Old Hall and Cascades, plus a view over to Knickerbrook.
| |
Cascades - A great corner. Lots of racing action and a gravel trap for very obvious reasons. A great post to gain signatures. Leads on to Lakeside when the full circuit is in use, or Fosters when the short circuit.
Lakeside - Long straight leading up to Island. You'll occasionally deal with those that got Cascades wrong!
Island - Tight hairpin. An interesting post. Lots of outbraking attempts into the bend, which often end in tears!
| |
Shell - Only used on the International circuit. An idyllic spot, with wonderful views over the lake, & an interesting bend - a banked hairpin. A pity it's not used more often.
| |
Foulstons (Britten's) - A nice chicane used on the International cicuit. Covers a very fast part of the circuit, from Lakeside to Shell, & the Foulston's chicane.
Hill Top | |
Fosters - Only used on the short circuit. Place of many overruns from Cascades when using the long circuit, and useful out-breaking zone for short circuit.
| |
Knickerbrook - Chicane is used when using either of the longer ciruits, and is approached at high speed so is the place for out-breaking. On the short circuit, is a fairly long right-hander with a deep gravel trap.
Clay Hill | |
Watertower | |
Druids - A fast double-apex bend with a dip on the exit to catch the unwary. Can be busy!
Warwick Bridge - Formerly Bailey Bridge
Lodge - Interesting post at the end of the long back straight, and is a tight right-hander that dips down on the exit of the turn. High entry speeds and out-breaking make this an active post.
| |
Deer Leap - Catches any overrun from Lodge. The post is very close to the action, so a good spot for enjoying the racing.
| |
Pit Straight - The 'forgotten' post!
Knickerbrook In - Between Hill Top & Knickerbrook. Normally manned by only a Post Chief & Flaggie(s), i.e. no incident team.
Lunch / Circuit Customs
|
At BRSCC & BARC meetings, marshals are usually invited for a drink at Race Control after the meeting; an excellent opportunity to swap 'fisherman's tales' - 'my incident was bigger than yours......' | Added by Dave Brand 15/09/2002 11:04

|
Prospective marshals can do a 'Walkabout' to sample life in orange.
The tour covers posts around the circuit, race control, etc. in the morning; the afternoon is spent on a post. It gives newcomers a good grounding in the layout of the circuit & how race meetings are run & also introduces them to their fellow marshals.

Marshal's Perspective

Nice, pleasant circuit. The only one I know. PA is a bit pants with its multiple echos echos echos and the commentary is diabolical! | Added by paul 20/08/2002 08:47

There have been sightings of various rare species of fauna, for example : Penguins, Pink Bears, Wee Brown Bears, Pigs and other kinds. These are usually to be found in and around the marshalling posts. | Added by webmaster 03/02/2005 07:43

New marshals, especially those under 16 who can't yet go out on the bank, will be welcomed into the Paddock / Assembly team. Get to know the cars and drivers, help organise them, check scrutineering tickets, assist with noise testing, brief them on conditions (and hazards!) as required. You'll see them into practice sessions, then put them in grid order for racing - a vital part of the race organisation, as it helps every event run smoothly and quickly when we're on a tight time schedule. Good fun, and a great introduction to marshalling... | Added by paddock.one 05/06/2004 22:58
